How to Choose a Good Quality Olive Oil
Many olive oils you find in the store are cut with poorer quality olive oil or even with seed oils (which are high in omega 6 fatty acids, can be inflammatory and dilute the quality of your olive oil). So what should you look for on the bottle to choose the highest quality oil?
Source and Traceability
Traceability is important when choosing an olive oil. This is how we know where it came from and whether it’s been diluted with other oils. The goal is to purchase an olive oil that comes 100% from one source (such as 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil). If you see that an oil comes from several different countries, it’s not pure and we don’t really know the quality of each of those oils that have been combined into one.
Certification
An olive oil that is certified should say so on the label. This means there is a traceable chain to its origin and that the production followed standards that ensure authenticity.
Organic vs non-Organic
I typically choose organic products for a lot of the food that I buy. However, in this case, I choose the non-Organic option because of its purity and traceability. An olive oil that comes from several different countries makes it harder to trace the standards of each oil and creates more opportunity for a lower quality oil to make it into the mix.
My top choice for olive oil comes from Costco:
Kirklands 100% Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the winner!
Now that you know a little bit more about what to look for on the labels of olive oil bottles, you’ll be able to make better decisions about the quality of your oil.

Another note about olive oil – make sure to store your olive oil in a dark container as sunlight will turn the oil rancid and affect the quality. I use this cute olive oil dispenser to keep my oil protected from sunlight and to control how much comes out when I’m cooking or using as dressing. I love how pretty it looks on my counter!
